Book 2 Chapter 17

Damien had put off telling Aria his plan for a while because he had thought that it would not have been an issue— that she wouldn’t make a fuss out of it. After all, she hadn’t really had an issue with… anything.

But Aria walked up to Damien with round eyes, letting go of Lena’s hand.

“Papa’s going to leave me again?” the little demon girl asked softly.

Damien pursed his lips. He hadn’t anticipated this reaction from her. She had been perfectly fine with him going on long trips beforehand. But he didn’t consider the fact that that had been the norm back then— when she had just been born. Right now, this was the longest continuous period of time where he had been together with her.

Which was a long time for Aria. Since she was still technically a newborn, any extended period of time was a substantial part of her life. Relatively-speaking, even a week must’ve felt like forever to her.

“I’m not going to be gone for long, Aria,” Damien said placatingly, dropping to a knee before his daughter. “I’ll be back before you know it.”

“But…” Aria hesitated, lowering her head. A morose look crossed her face. “You’ll leave again after that.”

“That’s—” Damien hesitated when he heard that.

He felt a pang of guilt when he heard her words. He wasn’t sure how he was supposed to respond— how he could comfort her. But Aria dejectedly drew back as she closed her eyes.

“I understand, papa. I’ll be waiting for you…”

And Damien could only watch as Aria dragged herself back towards Lena. The Leviathan-turned-human opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Aria just hugged her legs.

Damien chewed his lower lip, wondering if there was something else he should say. However, before he could even open his mouth, Agatha spoke up from behind him.

“Very well, then it’s decided,” the Captain of the Gate said as she looked towards the councilmembers. “Or do you have any disagreements with this deal, Councilmembers?”

The three councilmembers— Henry, Rose, and Archie— all exchanged a glance. For a moment, they looked uncertain. However, Archie cleared his throat as he raised a finger.

“Pardon us, give us a moment to come to an agreement.”

Archie brought the other two councilmembers to the side. And they deliberated for a minute as Damien watched. Finally, they drew back. And while Henry looked begrudging, Archie and Rose nodded to each other.

They all faced Agatha as they straightened.

“We have come to an agreement that under the stipulation that this human is able to put a halt to this vispider threat that has been plaguing us, we will offer him and his family our protection. However, if he fails, he is to be exiled from our city’s borders immediately.”

Archie declared as he looked towards Damien.

“Do you accept the terms of this agreement?”

And Damien just exchanged a quick glance with Ulric, before nodding. “Yeah, sure. That sounds easy enough.”

However, even though he wore a casual, reassuring face as he faced the councilmembers and Agatha… his mind could only drift to the morose look Aria had worn.
